January is a good time to update your “In Case of Emergency” file.
Start by reviewing your will, durable power of attorney, living will, and medical power of attorney. Ask yourself if your will still fits your life today.
Make sure your designated persons are still willing and able to do the job. Verify beneficiaries on insurance policies and retirement accounts.
Be sure you have these documents at the ready for your trusted person and/or executor:
- Birth, death, marriage certificates, divorce decrees.
- Social Security cards.
- Military records.
- Insurance policies.
- List of financial accounts—banking, brokerage, and retirement.
- Ownership documents—car titles and property deeds.
- Contact information for your attorney, tax professional, financial advisor, and insurance agent.
Have a conversation with your executor about any changes. Remind him or her about where you store your important documents.
