Story: The Executors

An elderly widow of modest means died after a short illness.  She had hastily done a will and chosen co-executors during a previous illness.  However, she did not communicate with her executors about her intentions or her assets.  When she died, they did not have a list of her assets or their location.  When they went to her house, they discovered that it was filled to the rafters--with canned goods to sewing kits to clothes to stationery--and hardly a place to sit down.  The mail and other documents such as bank statements were piled in the kitchen and in the dining room and in the bedroom.  Jewelry was hidden around the house and a diamond ring had rolled under the bed.  As they began to empty the bedroom closet, they discovered a safe, but had no idea what the combination was. The executors took months to clear out the house and settle the estate.
